I sing Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ at least six times every minute, I have an unbearable crushes on Rafael Nadal, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jason Bateman, and I had watched every episode of Sex and the City by the time I was 13-years-old.

What I’m getting at, here, is that I am unbelievably camp. And yet – and you may want to tie up your shoelaces tight, because I’m about to knock your socks off – I loathe Eurovision.

If I wanted to see badly dressed, out of weight wannabes wailing show tunes for hours on end, I’d hold a mirror to myself every time we had a work do at the local karaoke bar.

Yet, oddly, when I found out that Netflix was producing a film titled Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, my interest peaked. After all, they’re the masterminds behind Father of the Year. What could possibly go wrong?

The Release Date

Netflix announced that they intend on releasing Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga on June 26. Needless to say, they clearly – and thankfully – filmed this before this whole shit show took over the world.

The Director

David Dobkin is taking the helm on Eurovision, and has gone on to direct comedies such as Wedding Crashers, Fred Claus and The Change-Up. He was also an executive producer on R.I.P.D.; something I point blank refuse to refer to as a comedy.

Nice trying ruining Jeff Bridges’ career, David.

The Cast

This is a film based on the long-running international televised competition, Eurovision, and you therefore need actors who can sing. Just, y’know, not that well.

Which is why Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams have been cast to play aspiring Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir, respectively. To say I’m excited for the US leg of this film’s promotion is an understatement.

And when it comes to thespians who cannot hold a note to save their lives, look no further than the man who single handedly made Mamma Mia! – Pierce Brosnan, who is set to play Erick Erickssong, Lars’ father and – naturally – the most handsome man in Iceland.

The Music

Now, it wouldn’t really be a Eurovision without music, would it? I mean, that’s if you can call half of the songs performed on Eurovision as ‘music’.

Netflix released the first song from the film, titled ‘Volcano Man’, and the accompanying video sees Will and Rachel star as prog-rock icons atop a mountain.

I wish that sounded weird, but… Hey. That couldn’t be more Eurovision.
