While chatting with The Movie Dweeb, Ariel Winter lit up the moment Scooby-Doo came up, specifically, Netflix’s upcoming live-action reboot. When asked if playing Velma Dinkley would be the ultimate dream role, Ariel didn’t hesitate. “That would be iconic,” she said. “I would love that so much. That would be huge. That would be huge.”

But Ariel’s vision for Velma isn’t just the usual nerdy-sleuth fare. She added, “I would make Velma a badass B, for sure.” The crowd may not have heard it, but the internet definitely did. If Ariel gets her way, Velma’s days of just losing her glasses are over… This version would be solving supernatural murders and throwing hands if needed.

In classic Dweeb fashion, I offered to take a 20% finder’s fee if this casting dream becomes a reality. Ariel, without missing a beat, laughed and agreed: “Yes. A finder’s fee, obviously.” The moment was playful, but I also like to think kind of serious. The idea of Ariel stepping into the orange turtleneck suddenly doesn’t feel like fan fiction. It feels inevitable.

So Netflix, take note. If you’re hunting for a Velma who brings brains and bite, you might already have your girl. And I’ll be expecting my percentage when she’s officially cast. You heard it here first.

The Live-Action Scooby-Doo is Going Full Origin Story

Netflix’s new Scooby-Doo series is set to be a total reimagining of the iconic Hanna-Barbera franchise. Created by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy BebopHigh Fidelity), the live-action drama is taking things back, all the way to the eerie first case that brought the Mystery Inc. gang together.

Titled as-yet-untitled (but already spooky-sounding), the show kicks off during the teens’ final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, where childhood friends Shaggy and Daphne encounter a ghostly mystery and a lonely, scared Great Dane puppy that just might have witnessed a supernatural murder. Enter Velma, the science-minded townie, and Freddy, the handsome newcomer, and you’ve got a cast of meddling kids on the verge of something huge… And horrifying.

While this origin tale is steeped in darkness, Netflix insists it’ll still have all the beloved Scooby-Doo hallmarks: friendship, heart, and a lot of fun. “We’re excited to bring Scooby-Doo to TV as a live-action series for the first time,” said Netflix’s VP of scripted series, Peter Friedlander. “Together with creative powerhouses Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, we’re committed to delighting longtime fans and opening up a world of groovy adventures for a new era.”

The show marks the first time Scooby-Doo will be fully live-action on the small screen, and Warner Bros. Television execs are already hyping it as a franchise relaunch for the streaming generation. “It’s no mystery why audiences continue to love these iconic characters,” said WBTV’s Clancy Collins White. “We’re excited for a new generation to discover Mystery Inc.”

Ariel Winter Leads the Magical Mayhem in The Sisters Grimm

While she’s eyeing Velma for the future, Ariel Winter is already bringing some detective energy to her latest project: The Sisters Grimm, a new animated fantasy series premiering globally on Apple TV+ on October 3. Based on the bestselling books by Michael Buckley, the show follows two orphaned sisters navigating a world where fairytales and fantasy collide.

Ariel voices Sabrina, the older and more sceptical of the Grimm sisters, a role that lets her flex her comedic chops and emotional depth. Alongside co-star Leah Newman as Daphne, the duo uncover magical secrets and confront twisted versions of familiar characters, all while searching for the truth about their missing parents.

The series blends fantasy, mystery, and adventure with a strong sibling bond at its core. Think Stranger Things meets Once Upon a Time… but animated, fast-paced, and packed with clever references for grown-ups and kids alike. It’s a show that balances magical chaos with grounded heart; something Ariel has always done effortlessly in her roles.

Joining Ariel is a stacked voice cast that includes Laraine Newman, Abubakar Salim, Billy Harris, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Behind the scenes, the series is helmed by Amy Higgins and Erica Rothschild, with animation by Emmy-winning studio Titmouse, known for hits like The Legend of Vox Machina and Big Mouth.

It’s yet another smart move from Ariel, who continues to pivot from child-star success to voice-acting domination. Whether she’s battling Grimm creatures or chasing ghosts with Scooby-Doo, one thing’s clear: she’s got range, wit, and a voice you want leading your next big adventure.
