During my recent chat with Mason Thames and Nico Parker, the conversation took a very heroic turn. What started as a laugh about fancy dress costumes quickly spiralled into Mason casually manifesting one of the biggest superhero roles of all time: Spider-Man. And honestly? I can see it.
Mason had already ticked off one dream role, having previously dressed up as Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon, only to end up playing him in the upcoming live-action adaptation. But when I mentioned spotting old photos of him dressed as Spider-Man, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, and even a gorilla (yes, really), I had to ask what other childhood costume he’d like to bring to the big screen.
“I would love to be Shaggy,” Mason laughed, with Nico agreeing he’d “kill that.” But she quickly shifted gears: “Actually, Spider-Man is the obvious.”
And that’s when Mason dropped the line: “Yeah… I feel like every kid’s dream, you know, is to be Spider-Man.”

Now, I’m not saying Kevin Feige should be checking his inbox right this second, but let’s just say: if anyone from Marvel is reading this, The Movie Dweeb has found your next Spidey variant. When I suggested something out-there like “Spider-Dragon,” Mason didn’t miss a beat. “That hasn’t happened yet…” he smirked. Exactly, Marvel. The multiverse is wide open.
He even cheekily joked he was originally cast in Spider-Man: No Way Home… until “scheduling conflicts” got in the way. (Nico nearly believed him. So did I. My jaw was halfway to the floor.)
So, Could Mason Be the Next Spider-Man?
He wouldn’t be the first actor to don the iconic red-and-blue suit. Tobey Maguire swung onto the scene in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Andrew Garfield brought a more acrobatic flair in The Amazing Spider-Man, and Tom Holland became the MCU’s friendly neighbourhood hero. Not to mention the Spider-Verse films, where literally dozens of Spidey variants exist; from Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham to Spider-Man Noir and Pavitr Prabhakar.

The idea of a live-action Spider-Verse is already in the works, and casting a fresh face like Mason as one of the variants could be a brilliant move. After all, he’s already got the chops for leading roles, the fandom following, and the agility (have you seen him fight dragons?).
Speaking of Dragons…
Mason and Nico were chatting to me while promoting their latest project, the live-action How To Train Your Dragon film, an adaptation of the beloved DreamWorks animated franchise. Mason stars as Hiccup, the inventive Viking who befriends a Night Fury named Toothless, while Nico plays Astrid, his fiercely loyal (and dragon-riding) companion.
The original trilogy, known for its heart, humour, and breathtaking animation, set a high bar. But from my chat with them, it’s clear they’re bringing that same energy (and then some) to the live-action version. Nico even revealed that the first time she ever publicly spoke about the franchise was in an interview with me a year ago. Full circle moment, anyone?
Whether he’s swinging through the skyline or soaring through the skies on Toothless, Mason Thames is clearly ready for a superhero moment. Watch this space, Marvel. You might just find your next wall-crawler in a dragon saddle.
