Move over, Barbie… There’s a new doll in town, and she’s bringing half of Saturday Night Live with her. DreamWorks Animation has just dropped the trailer for Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, and while it’s aimed at kids, let’s be honest: I’m going to be tuning in just to hear that comedy line-up.

Because when else are you going to see Kristen Wiig, Ego Nwodim, Kyle Mooney, Melissa Villaseñor, Jason Mantzoukas, Thomas Lennon and Fortune Feimster voicing a ragtag crew of cats and chaotic characters in one pastel-hued adventure? Seriously, this voice cast reads like the RSVP list for a comedy hall of fame reunion… Except now they’re all trapped inside a talking dollhouse. And honestly? I vibe with that.

Wiig, who’s no stranger to playing eccentric oddballs, lends her unmistakable voice to Vera, an “eccentric cat lady” who nabs Gabby’s beloved dollhouse. Meanwhile, SNL faves like Nwodim, Mooney and Villaseñor join the feline fray, purr-fectly bringing to life characters like DJ Catnip, Cakey and Baby Box. Throw in Jason Mantzoukas for a little chaotic energy, and Thomas Lennon being… Well, Thomas Lennon, and it’s safe to say this might be the funniest kids’ film voice cast since Shrek roped in Eddie Murphy.

But don’t let the comedy chops fool you; this is still a family-friendly, heartwarming adventure at its core. Based on the wildly popular Netflix series created by Jennifer Twomey and Traci Paige Johnson, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie marks the first time the franchise hits the big screen, opening in UK cinemas on 17 October.

For those not in the know (or those without preschoolers in their life), the original Gabby’s Dollhouse series has been a global phenomenon since it debuted in 2021, charming kids with its blend of unboxing surprises, mixed media, and, you guessed it, adorable animated cats. It’s no surprise Netflix expanded it to 100 episodes and 11 seasons, or that it’s inspired everything from toys and books to theme park attractions.

In this cinematic adventure, Gabby (portrayed once again by Laila Lockhart Kraner) embarks on a road trip with her Grandma Gigi (music legend Gloria Estefan, because yes, even the grandmas in this movie are icons) to the magical metropolis of Cat Francisco. But disaster strikes when her dollhouse falls into the paws of Vera, sending Gabby on a quest to reunite the Gabby Cats and save her cherished dollhouse before it’s lost forever.

Directed by Ryan Crego (I Heart Arlo, Arlo the Alligator Boy), the film promises a sprinkle-filled journey packed with friendship, problem-solving, and more than a few catchy tunes. And with producer Steven Schweickart (whose CV includes How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 4, and The Croods) on board, you know it’s going to be a visual treat as well.

And honestly? If you’d told me five years ago I’d be clamouring to see Kristen Wiig battle Jason Mantzoukas over a sentient dollhouse, I wouldn’t have believed you. But here I am.
