Steve Coogan sat down with The Movie Dweeb to chat about his heartwarming new film, The Penguin Lessons, and in true Coogan style, the conversation quickly took a turn for the hilarious. As he discussed sharing the screen with Richard and Baba, the adorable penguin stars of the movie, he couldn’t help but compare them to his longtime friend and comedic foil, Rob Brydon. When asked who was easier to work with, Coogan wasted no time throwing Brydon under the (comedic) bus:

“That’s very easy, that. Rob answers back, which means, you know, it makes work for me. But penguins don’t do that, so they’re much more serene. So I’m in charge. But I knew they were going to steal the scene. I don’t mind losing out to a penguin. I do mind losing out to Rob Brydon.”

The Rob Brydon Bromance (And Roast)

Coogan and Brydon’s on-screen chemistry, perfected over The Trip series, has always been a mix of camaraderie and competition. Their dueling celebrity impressions; whether it’s duelling Michael Caines or elongated *Aha!*s, have become the stuff of legend. But even off-screen, their friendly rivalry never lets up. Coogan’s playful jab at Brydon is just another chapter in their long-running comedic battle, one that fans can’t get enough of.

And speaking of impressions, Coogan couldn’t resist mentioning his iconic Michael Caine voice. His Caine impression, originally honed to perfection for The Trip, has become one of his most beloved party tricks, even earning a nod from the man himself. Though Brydon often claims to do the superior version, Coogan made it clear that he reigns supreme… At least when Brydon isn’t around to argue.

Alan Partridge Forever: The “Dan!” Legacy

No Steve Coogan interview would be complete without a little Alan Partridge creeping in. While discussing The Penguin Lessons, he imagined how his most famous alter ego might react to the film.

In a moment of full-circle nostalgia, Coogan also took a moment to apologize to me, who’s aptly named Daniel, for the infamous Dan! moment from I’m Alan Partridge. For those unfamiliar (seriously, where have you been?), the scene features Alan shouting “Dan!” repeatedly in an excruciatingly awkward attempt to get the attention of a colleague. The scene has taken on a life of its own, leading to countless fans shouting “Dan!” at anyone unfortunate enough to share the name.

The Penguin Lessons: A Heartwarming Tale (With A Side of Comedy)

Beyond the banter, Coogan’s latest project, The Penguin Lessons, is a delightful mix of heart and humor. Based on the true story of English teacher Tom Michell, who rescued a penguin while working in Argentina, the film follows Michell’s unlikely friendship with the bird, named Juan Salvado. The story is one of compassion, adventure, and the unexpected bonds that can form between humans and animals.

Coogan plays Michell with his signature charm, balancing the film’s touching moments with his natural comedic timing. The movie showcases not just the joy of working with animals (even if they occasionally upstage their human co-stars), but also themes of responsibility, kindness, and the impact one small act can have on a life—whether human or penguin.

With The Penguin Lessons, Coogan proves once again why he remains one of Britain’s most beloved comedic actors. Whether he’s roasting Brydon, channeling Alan Partridge, or stealing hearts alongside a tuxedoed seabird, he continues to deliver comedy gold.
