Joe Mantegna, the voice behind Springfield’s favourite mob boss Fat Tony, joined The Movie Dweeb Podcast and didn’t hold back when discussing how The Simpsons navigates the ever-evolving landscape of political correctness. Reflecting on controversies like Hank Azaria stepping down from voicing Apu, Mantegna shared his thoughts on comedy, representation, and why the beloved animated series continues to resonate.

“This political correctness thing sometimes just goes too far,” Mantegna said. “The thing about The Simpsons is that they do this to everything and everybody—that’s the whole basis of it! No holds barred, and that’s okay, because it is what it is. You have to take it within the context of what it’s meant to be.”

Mantegna, who has played Fat Tony since the character’s debut in 1991, knows a thing or two about handling cultural sensitivity. Fat Tony first appeared in the episode Bart the Murderer, where the budding mob boss ropes Bart into running errands for his crew. Since then, Mantegna has voiced the character in over 30 episodes, cementing Fat Tony as one of Springfield’s most iconic—and hilariously exaggerated—figures.

Drawing parallels to his own Italian-American heritage, Mantegna addressed criticisms of portraying Italians as gangsters. “For over 20 years, I’ve hosted the Sons of Italy convention. It’s the largest Italian-American organization in the U.S., maybe the world. Sure, there’s a faction of people who say, ‘Oh, you can’t always portray Italians as gangsters.’ But let’s face it: the Mafia was mostly Italians and Sicilians. I’m half Sicilian! You can’t deny that.”

Mantegna emphasized balance in his career, pointing out that many of his characters—like David Rossi on Criminal Minds—represent positive depictions of Italian-Americans. “When I can, I balance the scales. But comedy is comedy. The Simpsons is a farce, and educated people understand that.”

He also praised the show’s unique ability to hold up a mirror to society without discrimination. “The Simpsons takes on anybody and everybody—nationalities, professions, you name it. That’s what makes it great. You don’t have to like everything, but you can’t pretend these things don’t exist.”

Mantegna’s passion for the character of Fat Tony runs deep. “I love that I’ve been able to inject aspects of who I am into Fat Tony. It’s great because all you have to do is switch the channel, and you’ll see me as David Rossi, a proud member of the FBI.”

Having voiced Fat Tony for over 30 years, Mantegna has become synonymous with the character’s smooth-talking charm and exaggerated gangster persona. Yet, his perspective on representation remains thoughtful and nuanced. “You can’t be dishonest or untruthful. It’s about context and understanding the intent behind the work.”

Whether he’s cracking jokes as Springfield’s most infamous mobster or solving cases as an FBI profiler, Joe Mantegna proves there’s room for humour and authenticity in storytelling—and The Simpsons remains a masterclass in balancing both.
