On the latest episode of The Movie Dweeb Podcast, I sat down with the wonderful Ailish Morrison to chat about all things movies – obviously – including the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Naturally, the conversation took a sharp detour into one of my most mortifying moments ever; an encounter with Jim Carrey that still makes me want to crawl under a rock. Like, a huge, huge rock. If you have one, please let me know.
It all started innocently enough. I was interviewing the legend himself, Jim Carrey, for his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog. As you’d expect, Jim was full of energy, jokes, and, apparently, impromptu serenades. Out of nowhere, he burst into a heartfelt rendition of James Blunt. If you’ve ever had Jim Carrey sing directly to you, let me tell you, it’s both magical and overwhelming. Naturally, I decided the only appropriate response was to pretend to cry. (Who do I think I am? Trying to join in on a Jim Carrey comedy bit?)

But Jim, being the generous soul he is, didn’t leave it there, as he offered me a warm hug. And who’s saying no to a hug from Jim Carrey? Not me. As I stood up to accept, my pants – the very pants I had carefully chosen to look semi-professional yet comfortable – betrayed me in the most spectacular fashion.
Before I knew it, they rolled down, leaving me standing there, flashing Jim Carrey. Nope. That wasn’t a typo. You read that correctly.
To make matters worse, he audibly shuddered. A full-body shudder. And not the kind that says, “Wow, what an unforgettable moment,” but more like, “Dear God, why is this happening to me? What have I done to deserve this?”
When I shared this story with Ailish, she couldn’t stop laughing. But even she admitted it was a solid contender for the most awkward celebrity encounter of all time. And honestly? Same. I agree.
So, if you’re ever wondering how to make a lasting impression on a Hollywood icon, take it from me: keep your pants securely fastened. Or better yet, just don’t stand up.
