Jodie Turner-Smith is stepping into the Grid, but not without a few aches and pains along the way. In an exclusive chat with me, The Movie Dweeb, the Queen & Slim star opened up about her role in Tron: Ares, the highly anticipated sequel in Disney’s iconic sci-fi franchise. While fans are eager to see the film’s neon-lit action sequences and gravity-defying stunts, Turner-Smith revealed that performing them in her high-tech suit was a challenge in itself.
“It’s very cool when somebody, like, gives you one of them, like, supersuits,” she laughed. “It’s cool at first, and then you realise you have to wear it, and my God, are they uncomfortable. God bless Disney, they paid me to train for a very long time before I did that movie. Thank God. It was amazing. I loved that. I thought I was training to be able to, you know, do the wire work, and I was training to be able to wear [the suit]. That whole thing is dragging your body down, so I was just like, ‘Yeah, actually I’m okay. Strong. I can do this.’”

While Turner-Smith is no stranger to action-heavy roles, Tron: Ares pushed her physical limits in ways she didn’t expect. “They’re just so hard to move in, and then you gotta move, you gotta run, you gotta jump, you gotta get on wires, you gotta do all this stuff,” she explained. “I’m like, ‘Guys, haven’t we cracked it yet, by making it a bit more comfortable?’ Every time you watch one of these movies—Avengers, whatever—and they’re wearing these supersuits, I’m telling you, those actors are uncomfortable.”
The latest installment in the Tron franchise, directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), is set to expand the digital universe fans first fell in love with in the 1982 classic. Turner-Smith joins a cast that includes Jared Leto as the titular Ares, along with Evan Peters and Greta Lee in yet-to-be-disclosed roles. While plot details remain tightly under wraps (probably protected by some sort of Disney-encrypted firewall), the film promises cutting-edge visuals and high-stakes action that will push the boundaries of the Grid like never before.

But Tron: Ares isn’t the only exciting project on Turner-Smith’s plate. She’s also taking on the world of international espionage in the upcoming series The Agency. Starring alongside Michael Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright, Turner-Smith plays a Sudanese anthropology professor.
From battling cyberspace villains in Tron: Ares to outsmarting international spies in The Agency, Jodie Turner-Smith is proving once again that she’s a force to be reckoned with—supersuit discomfort and all.
