Hold onto your hats, folks—because It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is about to invade Abbott Elementary, and the king of chaos himself, Danny DeVito, has spilled the beans on this wild crossover event. If you think Frank Reynolds and the rest of The Gang are going to behave themselves in an elementary school setting, think again. DeVito says Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) should be “terrified” of what’s coming her way. And let’s just say, terror doesn’t even begin to cover it.
DeVito opened up about his recent filming experience, which involved getting packed in ice (yes, you read that right) and—wait for it—eating mulch. He added, “I shot last week, outside of the school. It was supposed to be winter, so I was packed in ice, and it has to do with me eating mulch, and being caught in a cage.” It seems the world of Always Sunny is going to get even crazier when it collides with Abbott Elementary.
Now, if you think that sounds like a wild ride, just wait for the next bit of info DeVito shared. He revealed that the biggest challenge for him and his Always Sunny co-stars—Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney—was the lack of swearing on Abbott Elementary. “You can’t swear on their show. We are foul language people on It’s Always Sunny,” DeVito confessed. “We say pretty much anything we want.” But alas, the Gang will have to hold back on the profanity—at least a little bit—as they navigate the world of Abbott Elementary.
The crossover is going to air in two parts, with the first episode featuring It’s Always Sunny as part of the upcoming season. Why would The Gang need to visit an elementary school, you ask? Well, DeVito teased that we’ll just have to tune in to find out. But one thing’s for sure: Frank Reynolds has no business being around kids—and we can’t wait to see what happens when he gets to mix with the lovable staff of Abbott Elementary.
In case you forgot, Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson teased this crossover earlier at ComicCon in July. She said, “We will be doing an interesting crossover this season… But I’m not going to tell you with who or with what or where or when or how, but it’s really exciting, and I think it’ll change television as we know it.” Well, if Danny DeVito’s description of the chaos that’s about to unfold is any indication, Quinta might just be onto something major here.
This crossover promises to shake things up in a way that only Frank Reynolds could manage—through questionable behavior, chaos, and lots of mulch. And if that doesn’t have you excited, we don’t know what will.

This comes off the back of my previous interview with Danny Devito, where I couldn’t help but ask the legendary actor about his potential future as Super Mario Bros.villain Wario in the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. DeVito was his usual playful self, responding with, “You never know what happens in the world. I’m up for a lot of things, you know. Yeah, I’m ready to do a lot of things. So whatever’s coming, I look at it, I evaluate it, and I’ll have a word with Chris Pratt. Let them know that I’m going to take them to the cleaners, but that I should be in the movie.”
Now, if that isn’t an endorsement for Wario, I don’t know what is. Let’s just hope Chris Pratt is ready for DeVito’s Super Mario takeover! Whether it’s Frank Reynolds or Wario, Danny DeVito is always up for a little mischief, and we’re all here for it.
So, buckle up, folks. The It’s Always Sunny and Abbott Elementary crossover is coming, and we can’t wait to see Frank Reynolds wreak havoc in an elementary school. Will Janine Teagues survive? Only time will tell—but knowing Frank, probably not.
