Troy Baker, one of the most prolific voice actors in gaming, recently sat down with The Movie Dweeb to discuss his portrayal of the legendary archaeologist in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The conversation revealed some fascinating behind-the-scenes stories, including how his whip training nearly led to an arrest and his thoughts on following in the footsteps of Harrison Ford.

Whip Training Gone Wrong

To prepare for the role, Baker underwent extensive training in both hand-to-hand combat and whip handling. However, what started as a simple training session quickly escalated into an unexpected run-in with law enforcement.

“I spent days training with this incredible fight coordinator,” Baker recalled. “The first time he saw my punch, he just went, ‘Wrong.’ I thought I had something there, but nope.”

Baker’s training took a more unusual turn when he started working with one of Hollywood’s top stunt coordinators for whip training. Due to COVID restrictions at the time, their sessions had to be outdoors, which led them to a park in Southern California.

“I’ll never forget this,” Baker said. “He told me, ‘Make sure you wear long sleeves, maybe something that covers your neck. And when the cops come—not if the cops come—just let me do the talking.’”

Sure enough, after practicing with various whips—including the standard six-foot trick whip, the eight-foot camera whip, and the ten-foot display whip—the distinct cracking sound drew the attention of local authorities.

“The first time he cracked it, it sounded like a gunshot,” Baker explained. “Two cops came over immediately, and my trainer just walked up to them, started talking, and eventually, they let us go. But for a moment, it felt like we were in real trouble.”

Becoming Indiana Jones

Stepping into the role of Indiana Jones is no small feat, especially considering the character’s decades-long association with Harrison Ford. Rather than attempting to mimic Ford’s iconic portrayal, Baker focused on capturing the essence of Indy.

“There’s just inherently who Harrison is as a person that informs every decision he makes,” Baker said. “Even moments we consider iconic—like the famous marketplace scene where Indy shoots the swordsman—were born out of necessity. Harrison was literally sick that day and wanted to go back to his trailer.”

Baker emphasized the importance of staying true to the character’s spirit rather than rigidly adhering to past performances. “Indiana Jones is someone who lives moment to moment. If you overthink it, if you start pulling from an Encyclopedia of Indiana Jones, you lose what makes him special. You have to ‘reach for the vine’ when the whip is taken from you.”

For Baker, the goal wasn’t to recreate Indy from Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Last Crusade, but to deliver a performance that felt authentic for The Great Circle.

“Does this feel like the Indiana Jones we needed for this story? I believe the answer is yes.”

Troy Baker’s Legacy in Gaming

Troy Baker is no stranger to video games, having played some of the industry’s most iconic characters, including Joel in The Last of Us, Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite, and the Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. His ability to bring emotional depth and nuance to his performances has made him one of the most respected voice actors in gaming.

In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Baker takes on the legendary role of the adventurous archaeologist, bringing a fresh yet familiar energy to the character. The game, published by Bethesda, immerses players in a thrilling new Indiana Jones adventure, filled with ancient mysteries, pulse-pounding action, and, of course, plenty of whip-cracking.

The Legacy of Indiana Jones

Since Raiders of the Lost Ark debuted in 1981, Indiana Jones has remained one of the most beloved cinematic heroes. Created by George Lucas and brought to life by Harrison Ford under the direction of Steven Spielberg, Indy’s blend of intelligence, bravery, and humor has made him an enduring pop culture icon.

Ford’s portrayal of the character across five films—from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s most iconic action heroes. With The Great Circle, the franchise expands further into the gaming world, allowing fans to step into Indy’s boots like never before.

Troy Baker’s performance in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle offers a new take on the character while respecting the legacy of what came before. Whether it’s narrowly avoiding arrest during training or capturing the adventurer’s spirit in the recording booth, Baker’s commitment to the role ensures that Indy’s legend continues to thrive in this exciting new chapter.
