Danny DeVito is ready to throw on some purple overalls, twirl his mustache, and cause some mayhem in the Mushroom Kingdom. While promoting his latest film, Poolman, DeVito revealed to The Movie Dweeb that he’s totally up for playing Wario in a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie—and honestly, who wouldn’t want to see that?
“You never know what happens in the world,” DeVito teased when asked about the fan campaign to cast him as Mario’s chaotic, garlic-loving rival. “I’m up for a lot of things, you know? I’m ready to do a lot of things. Whatever’s coming, I look at, I see, I evaluate.”

But the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star didn’t stop there—he even gave me a mission. “You should tell [Chris Pratt] that I’m going to take him to the cleaners, but that I should be in the movie.” Now, that’s a power move Wario himself would be proud of!
Charlie Day and Jack Black Weigh In on Wario
DeVito already has the support of at least one Mushroom Kingdom resident. Charlie Day, who played Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, previously told Digital Spy that he thinks his It’s Always Sunny co-star would make a perfect Wario. “You can put anyone from It’s Always Sunny in the Mushroom Kingdom; it’ll be great. Maybe DeVito would be a great Wario. He would be really good.”
However, Jack Black—who voiced the fire-breathing Bowser—has another idea. Speaking to GameSpot, Black suggested that The Last of Us and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal should take on the role instead. “It’s not a given that Bowser will return,” Black said, hinting at a possible shake-up in the villain lineup. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”
Look, Pedro Pascal is great, but can he match DeVito’s legendary chaotic energy? Fans will just have to wait and see who gets the gig!
What’s Next for The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive hit, raking in over $1.36 billion at the global box office and solidifying its place as one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Starring Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, the movie brought the beloved Nintendo franchise to life with dazzling animation, nostalgia-packed Easter eggs, and an absolute earworm of a Bowser ballad.
With a sequel already in the works, fans are eagerly speculating which characters will join the fray. Wario and Waluigi are at the top of many wish lists, and with DeVito’s interest, the dream casting might just become reality.
Meet Poolman: Danny DeVito’s Latest Project
Before he (potentially) jumps into the Mushroom Kingdom, Danny DeVito is making waves in Poolman, a quirky new comedy directed by and starring Chris Pine. The film follows Darren Barrenman (Pine), a Los Angeles pool cleaner who stumbles upon a shady conspiracy while trying to save his local community pool. Think Chinatown, but with more sunscreen and fewer fedoras.

Joining Pine in this offbeat mystery are an impressive ensemble cast, including Annette Bening, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and DeVito himself. Pine makes his directorial debut with Poolman, blending absurd humor with noir-style intrigue. The film promises a mix of satire, social commentary, and just the right amount of weirdness—exactly what you’d want from a project featuring Danny DeVito. Whether he’s investigating corruption or scheming to join the Super Mario sequel, one thing’s for sure: DeVito never fails to keep things interesting!
