It’s been 12 years since The Simpsons Movie was released. Open the door, and let that sink in. Feel old yet? Anyone who answers ‘no’ to that is either a liar, or is too young to actually be reading this.
While at San Diego Comic-Con, the show’s creator, Matt Groening, explained why there hasn’t been a sequel to The Simpsons Movie since 2007. And it’s not because Matt’s now a multi, multi, multi millionaire and doesn’t need to work another day in his life. (Which, let’s face it, is exactly what I’d do if I had his money.)
Speaking at Ballroom 20, Matt explained as to why there hasn’t been a The Simpsons Movie 2 yet.
This is a true answer. The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.
It’s a shame to hear that The Simpsons – a show beloved by so many – was such a chore on for the writers, animators and actors; it’s difficult to see their passion project become something so difficult for them… But then again, I want to see Bart’s junk again, so if you could stop moping about, that’d be great.
Matt Groening did, later, hint at a possible sequel in the future, saying “No doubt there will be another Simpsons Movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money,” referencing the recent Disney/Fox merger.
If you need help with scripting, Matt, hear out this suggestion for the sequel – Spider-Cow. How about that?! Revolutionary.
