In the past, we’ve had some exceptional portrayals of The Joker – such as Cesar Romero’s iconic and camp performance, and Heath Ledger’s Oscar-worthy take on the character in The Dark Knight.
And then there was Jared Leto’s The Joker in Suicide Squad. We should probably move on now, shouldn’t we?

In case you haven’t seen The Joker in a movie yet – and if not, I can only assume that’s because you’re blind, and, if so, how are you reading this article? – you can expect to see the ever-so-serious thespian, Joaquin Phoenix take on the role of Batman’s nemesis, directed by Todd Phillips, the man behind The Hangover. What could possibly go wrong?
Ah. Todd Phillips also directed The Hangover III. We should probably move on now, shouldn’t we?
Todd teased Joaquin’s rendition with the first official snap, however – surprisingly – it doesn’t show the Gladiator star with white make-up and wild green hair, but looking like he’s Javier Bardem’s identical twin.
This movie is set to show the origin of The Joker; from starting off as a failed stand-up comedian, to his status as the gruesome menace of Gotham City… And even becoming a cult figure for dodgy market vendors to illegally print on t-shirts and flog down Camden for £4.99 each.
While it’s not set for release for another year, Twitter had my back and produced some of the finest examples of roasting the world will ever see. Ladies and gentlemen, you’re welcome…
Joaquin Phoenix as the joker kinda just looks like he’s playing Lord Farquaad in a live action Shrek reboot pic.twitter.com/B8jg4A4H85

I was sceptical about Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker but they’ve absolutely nailed the character’s look pic.twitter.com/57eJICCHNp

Joaquin Phoenix in a JOKER origin movie has the same hair as me in freshman year of high school. Coincidence? You tell me, man. You tell me. pic.twitter.com/0aswEkBkAn
