Benjamin Byron Davis and The Movie Dweeb—back at it again! That’s right, folks, this marks the second time I’ve had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the man behind one of gaming’s most iconic outlaws, Dutch van der Linde. And just like last time, Benjamin delivered a goldmine of insight, humor, and passionate opinions about video game adaptations.
Jack Black in a Red Dead Movie? Benjamin Byron Davis Has Thoughts…
With Jack Black making the rounds in the video game adaptation world—first as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and soon as Claptrap in Borderlands—I had to ask Benjamin who he’d like to see Jack play in a hypothetical Red Dead Redemption movie. His answer? A character that would no doubt be crushed (in the best way possible) by Jack’s comedic genius:

“I think he is capable of a great deal of range,” Benjamin said. “I think Jack Black would be a remarkable Uncle. [He] would crush Uncle.”
And honestly? He’s got a point. Uncle, the lazy yet loveable member of the Van der Linde gang, is basically tailor-made for Jack’s mix of charm and absurdity. But Benjamin didn’t stop there—he also threw out some other contenders, including the camp’s cook and shopkeeper, Simon Pearson, and even minor characters like Blind Man Cassidy. Someone, somewhere, needs to make this happen!
The Borderlands Connection: Benjamin & Jack’s Real-Life Friendship
Benjamin’s endorsement of Jack Black makes even more sense when you consider the fact that the two actually worked together on the upcoming Borderlands movie. He had nothing but praise for Jack, calling him an “absolute legend” and hinting that their time together on set was a blast.
And let’s be real—when you’ve got two larger-than-life personalities like Jack and Benjamin in the same space, you know there are some great behind-the-scenes stories waiting to be told. Perhaps a future Movie Dweeb exclusive?
The Legacy of Red Dead Redemption and Benjamin’s Standout Performance
Of course, no chat with Benjamin Byron Davis would be complete without talking about his unforgettable performance as Dutch van der Linde in Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter was an absolute juggernaut, breaking sales records and earning critical acclaim for its gripping story, breathtaking open world, and powerhouse performances—including Benjamin’s. His portrayal of Dutch, the gang’s charismatic yet ultimately doomed leader, cemented him as one of gaming’s most memorable villains (or tragic antiheroes, depending on how you look at it).
And while fans would love to see Red Dead make the leap to the big screen, Benjamin himself has some strong opinions on that front.
Should a Red Dead Movie Happen? Benjamin Weighs In… Again
Flashback to my first interview with Benjamin, where I asked him about potential video game adaptations. He made his stance clear: he believes the original actors should get the chance to portray their characters in live-action. And when it comes to who should play Dutch, he didn’t hesitate:
“Who would I want to see play the role [of Dutch van der Linde]?” he pondered. “Nobody but me.”
But, in true Benjamin fashion, he did soften his stance slightly, admitting that if Hollywood ever decides to go all-in on a Red Dead movie, he’d wish the actor taking on Dutch nothing but the best—though he personally feels too attached to the role to see anyone else step into Dutch’s boots.
And honestly? Fair enough. His performance was nothing short of legendary, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else delivering those iconic monologues with the same level of gravitas (and occasional unhinged energy) as he did.
