Tom Holland has played a superhero, a treasure hunter, and even a Pixar elf—but don’t expect him to add a certain smoldering Disney prince to his resume anytime soon. While promoting Pixar’s Onward, Holland sat down with The Movie Dweeb and reacted to fan-casting that had him pegged as Flynn Rider in a live-action Tangled. His response? A charmingly polite nope.
Tom Holland on Onward
Before we get into Tangled, let’s talk about Onward! This 2020 Pixar adventure saw Holland voicing Ian Lightfoot, a socially awkward teenage elf who embarks on a magical quest alongside his chaotic older brother, voiced by Chris Pratt. The film combined classic fantasy elements with modern suburban life (think unicorns rummaging through trash and centaurs in cargo shorts) and packed the kind of emotional gut punch that only Pixar can deliver. If you didn’t cry during that ending, are you even human?

A Live-Action Tangled? Maybe—But Not with Tom Holland
When asked about playing Flynn Rider, Holland admitted, “Probably not, no. I really like that film, y’know? There’s a lot of these live-action versions of animated films that I loved as a kid and I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I need them.’” It’s a fair point—Disney’s recent string of live-action remakes has been met with mixed reactions, and Tangled fans are protective of their beloved animated classic.
However, Holland did joke that he’d be open to playing Rapunzel instead. Imagine him rocking that 70-foot golden hair—now that would be a plot twist.
The Internet’s Dream Cast for Tangled
While Holland might not be keen on playing Flynn, fans have been busy dream-casting the perfect Tangled remake. At the top of the list? Florence Pugh as Rapunzel. With her effortless charm, powerhouse acting skills, and ability to go from soft and sweet to totally badass (hello, Yelena Belova), Pugh seems like the ideal choice to bring the lost princess to life.
And what’s Rapunzel without a wickedly charismatic Mother Gothel? Enter Kathryn Hahn. If WandaVision taught us anything, it’s that Hahn knows how to play a deliciously devious villain with just the right amount of camp. Plus, we already know she can belt a tune—seriously, ‘Agatha All Along’ was a Billboard hit.
So, while Tom Holland might be sitting this one out (unless Disney reworks the script for a Rapunzel gender swap), a live-action Tangled could still be a golden opportunity—pun very much intended.
What do you think? Should Holland reconsider the role? And is Florence Pugh the perfect Rapunzel? Let us know in the comments!
