Scottish actor Martin Compston has faced many challenges in his career, but nothing quite as brutal as the roasting he received from his The Rig co-stars Iain Glen and Emily Hampshire. During an interview on The Movie Dweeb, the duo playfully threw Compston under the bus—accusing him of everything from illegal activity to introducing Hampshire to a dangerous new addiction.
Emily Hampshire, best known for her role as Stevie Budd in Schitt’s Creek, hilariously recounted her introduction to Scottish culture, courtesy of Compston. “He gave me my first Irn-Bru. It was the equivalent to someone being a drug dealer,” she joked.
The conversation spiralled when Emily and I jokingly suggested that the reason Compston wasn’t present at the press junket was because he had been arrested. “It became problematic,” she admitted, before confessing that her love for Scotland’s national soft drink quickly escalated. “Everyone knew I liked Irn-Bru, so everyone gave me Irn-Bru, and it became a pretty serious addiction.”
But while Hampshire embraced some elements of Scottish cuisine, she drew the line at haggis.”
Glen played the ever-loyal, ever-heartbroken Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones for seven seasons, winning over fans with his tragic devotion to Daenerys Targaryen. While The Rig hasn’t yet had quite the same cultural impact as Game of Thrones, it’s clearly found an enthusiastic audience—especially in Scotland.
Season 2 of The Rig is set to take the supernatural thriller to new heights—literally, as the surviving crew members find themselves in an even more perilous situation. Following the dramatic events of Season 1, the story moves from the Kinloch Bravo oil rig to a secret research facility, where the characters must uncover more about the mysterious forces that have taken hold of the North Sea.
Expect more eerie suspense, intense action, and—if Emily Hampshire has anything to say about it—plenty of Irn-Bru.
