UPDATE: Since publishing this article, Rachel Zegler has been invited by the Academy to present an award. I’m glad I wrote this whole article only for it to be made redundant immediately.
Have you ever walked into a place and immediately thought, “I shouldn’t be here”?
For me, that’s a regular occurrence.
I don’t belong at parties – who wants to hear me bang on about the cinematography of Homeward Bound, when they’re trying to pull?
I don’t belong near banks – it’s just sad and depressing as I beg outside, screaming “PLEASE, LET ME JUST SEE WHAT MONEY LOOKS LIKE”.
I don’t belong anywhere that does sports – I’m literally sweating as I type this. (Also, is “does sports” a sentence?)
On the flip side, have you ever not walked into a place and immediately thought, “I should be there”?
That’s the situation that Golden Globe winning actress, Rachel Zegler faced, when she was bizarrely not invited to this year’s Academy Awards, despite playing the leading role in West Side Story, a film nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
There’s no jokes here, or silly comments. I just want you to open that door and let that sink in.
Rachel took to Instagram and wrote, “I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
“I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did three years ago.”
This is also a world where Tony Hawk, DJ Khaled and Shaun White have been invited to the Oscars, to present awards. I assume it was Shaun’s exceptional stint as Clueless Smurf in 2013’s Smurfs 2 which sealed his invite.
As usual, Twitter did the Lord’s work, and was equally as disappointed by Rachel not getting an invite, as she was, so in what may be a better display than the Academy Awards themselves, here’s some of the funniest reactions I found on Twitter…
