In my lifetime, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some of my acting idols – I won’t bang on about them this time, like I do in EVERY single other of my posts.
Chadwick Boseman was always a star who I longed to chat to. However, on 28 August, 2020, the Black Panther star passed away following a secret battle with colon cancer, which not only shook the Marvel fandom, but the world itself.
When I caught up with Guardians of the Galaxy’s Sean Gunn, we discussed the tragic passing of Chadwick, after the two shared a set together on both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
“Like everyone, I guess, I did not know that he was sick; I didn’t know that he had cancer” admitted an emotional Sean Gunn, before saying “[Chadwick] struck me as a guy who had the weight of the world on his shoulders.”
The Gilmore Girls star continued to share a fond memory of his with Chadwick; “I remember being at lunch with him the first day that we were on set together and we were at opposite ends of a couple tables and I was like ‘That’s Chadwick. I should go introduce myself’.
“At the end of lunch, I felt these hands on my shoulders, giving me a friendly shoulder rub, and I looked up and it was Chadwick. He’s like ‘How are you doing, Sean? Is everybody treating you okay?’
“I was totally startled by it. I was like ‘Oh, he knew who I was, and he knows that I’m new here, and he cared about what I was doing here’. I think he was a great dude, and I wish we had more time with him,” said Sean.
Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away at the age of 43, in his Los Angeles home with his wife and family by his side, according to a statement on social media.
The Black Panther actor was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, but decided to not make the information public knowledge.
Many of the stars and celebrities who shared a screen with the acclaimed actor shared tributes to Chadwick on social media, with Letitia Wright – who played his sister, Shuri, in Black Panther – saying “this hurts. really hurts.”
Jordan Peele referred to the news as a “crushing blow,” while his Avengers co-star, Mark Ruffalo said “What a man, and what an immense talent.
“Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only the beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.”
